You can put all the meditation methods of this world in these two categories. There is no third category of meditation as far as some method is concerned.
First type of meditations are objective, they have object in terms of mantra, symbol, ritual or some process — that is, you work with the object. For clarification what is object, it is something which is not ‘you’ but you work with ‘it.’
Second type of meditations are subjective, for instance, you are ‘subject’ — they work just for subjectivity; they directly work on ‘you.’ Just an example, if you reach to the point where you can witness your thoughts — is your subjectivity, and they work to enhance this subjectivity. The transformation in this type is quick — it helps to reach you on your own source, on your own godhood.
The spiritual gurus for the first type are in plenty but for the second type are fairly less.
